The Trade-Mart Dundee Stars are thrilled to work alongside V&A Dundee, Developing the Young Workforce Tay Cities and Social Enterprise Schools to host a dragons den styled competition

The brief is for young people to design a sustainable product to support ice hockey fans’ physical and mental health.

The objective of this competition is to challenge primary school students to create a sustainable minded product that can support the physical and mental health of ice hockey fans and/or the wider community.

The product should be innovative, practical, and environmentally friendly, with a focus on promoting holistic well-being. This project aims to empower pupils to become social change makers by reinvesting their profits into their community.

The target Audience: Primary school students taking part in the Social Enterprise Dragon’s Den in Collaboration with DYW, V&A Dundee and the Trade-MartDundee Stars.

Context:

Ice hockey is a popular sport that attracts fans from all walks of life. However, being a fan of the sport can also come with its own set of physical and mental health challenges. From the physical strain of sittng in cold arenas for long periods of time to the mental stress of supporting a team through wins and losses, ice hockey fans can benefit from products that help support their well-being.

Requirements:
– The product should be designed with sustainability in mind, using eco-friendly materials and
manufacturing processes.
– The product should address a specific physical or mental health need of ice hockey fans, such as
staying warm during games, reducing stress and anxiety, or promoting physical activity.
– The product should be practical and functional for use before, during or after ice hockey games or
related activities.
– The design should be original, creative, and visually appealing to engage the target audience.
Deliverables:
– A detailed description of the product, including its purpose, features, and benefits.
– Sketches or diagrams of the product design.
– Materials and manufacturing specificaƟons.
– An explanation of how the product promotes sustainability and supports the well-being of ice
hockey fans.

Judging Criteria:
– Creativity and innovation in the design.
– Business Plan.
– Impact of the product.

– Relevance to the theme of sustainability and well-being.
– Practicality and functionality.
– Clarity and organisation of the presentation.
– Ease of manufacture.

Prize:
– The winning design team will receive £100 and have the opportunity to collaborate with the Trade-Mart Dundee
Stars to bring their product to market with the profits given to the school to invest in their own social
cause.

All participating schools will also receive £50 seed funding towards their own social cause.

Timeline:
– Schools should carry out their own process and select a winner to bring to the event.
– PPT and Business Plan to be submitted by 27th September.
– Judging and selection of the winning design will take place at the Dragon’s Den Event at V&A
Dundee on Wednesday 2nd October.
– The winner will be announced at the event.
– Teacher to provide impact feedback to Social Enterprise in March 2025.
– Social Enterprise Awards Ceremony in June 25 – All Schools will receive an invite to this prestigious
event and receive a certificate and digital badge.

Notes for Teachers:  This project is a good opportunity to provide IDL through a real-life context using the Meta-
Skills Framework. Meta Skills Toolkit  There will also be the opportunity to participate in CLPL through the Social Enterprise

Academy and add to your network of collaborators for future projects.  For the event on 2nd October, we will provide you with travel for up to 12 Children and 2
Adults. This means you can bring one team of 12, 2 x teams of 6, 3 teams of 4 or 4 teams of
3… This is entirely up to you and will be dependent on how you conduct your internal
competition.  Please bring packed lunches on the day.
