The 20-year-old, goalie joins the club after spending the last eight seasons icing in the North American junior leagues, most recently with Potomac Patriots of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL).
Born in Oxshott, England, Lucas will make his professional with the Stars this season as he makes his first move into professional hockey.
The 6-foot-1-inch tall, netminder has spent the past five years playing around the United States junior leagues after beginning his career at age 12 with Guildford Firestars in 2014, before moving to Canada to play three seasons of Triple A hockey.
Last season, Brine began the season with USPHL outfit, Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings where he played 15 games, posting a save percentage of .942% in seven wins and eight losses, with a 2.59 goals against average.
He then made the mid-season switch to join Potomac and would feature in six regular season games, winning four and recording .927 save percentage, with a 2.68 GAA.
Weighing in at 170lbs Brine has already won some silverware during his nine-year career, as back in 2014-2015, he was an English U16 Champion with the Firestars.
Then in the 2021-2022 campaign, he picked up a Bronze Medal with Team GB Under 20’s at the World Junior Championships (Division 2A) in Brasov, Romania and would then claim the USPHL Premier (Mountain Division) Championship title.
The Englishman has also represented Team GB at Under 18 level in the U18 World Junior Championships (Division 1B), back in 2018-2019, as well as in U16’s competitions and also England in 2014-2015.
LEFEBVRE ON BRINE
After signing the first part of goaltending tandem, Stars Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach, Marc LeFebvre, said: “We are very excited to get a good, young goalie of Lucas’s pedigree.
“He has got great numbers from playing over in the junior leagues of North America and he has represented GB at Under 20’s level and had great success there.
“Checking with all my contacts over in North America in those leagues, people that I know, everything struck and from talking to the GB Under 20’s Coach, Martin Grubb as well, everything struck on that accord too.
“So, we are very excited to have him and after speaking to him on the phone, you can tell he is a very confident young man in his ability and we are looking forward to having him at the Stars.”
LeFebvre continued: “Gone are the days of playing 60 straight games now in the Elite League, like we used to see but now you need two strong goaltenders and you see that all over the world.
“You need kind of a 1A and 1B, or a good tandem, to alleviate the pressure off of the starting goaltender, because you cannot have someone playing every single game and every single minute.
“So, you need a capable back up that is going to come in and give you some quality minutes and a chance to win when the starter is not playing and we are very confident Lucas can do that.”
LUCAS ON HIS FIRST STEPS INTO PRO HOCKEY
Once his move to Dundee was confirmed, an ecstatic Lucas said: “I am super excited, it has always been a dream of mine to play pro hockey and I am grateful that I can do it at home in the UK.
“I am really thankful that the Stars have given me this opportunity and I cannot wait.”
Discussing how the move came out, Brine added: “I had just finished my season in America, playing junior hockey and I was weighing up my options for next year whether that was going down the college route or playing pro somewhere.
“The coach gave me a phone call, it was a pretty good talk that we had and pretty quickly I knew what I wanted to do.”
The young shot-stopper then shared his desire to continue developing his game in Dundee and utilise his past international experiences with Team GB to progress even more.
Lucas said: “I think I can step up in those high intensity situations and that is the same thing I want to do this year, I want to push the guys in front of me but also do as well as I can when I get in net.
“Playing for GB was a massive honour for me, I got to play for them at two world championships and a U16 tournament in the Czech Republic, and that is not an opportunity not a lot of British guys have.
“To go overseas to other countries to play the best players in those countries, it is great for development and pushes your game to the next level, so just to have that experience and to hopefully keep having more experiences with GB would be awesome.”
