FIFE FLYERS 2 TRADE-MART DUNDEE STARS 7

The Trade-Mart Dundee Stars made it back-to-back four-point weekends as they defeated Fife Flyers 7-2 in Kirkcaldy to keep their hopes of progressing in the Challenge Cup alive.

The Stars had some good chances in the opening minutes but also made a few mistakes that led to some dangerous chances for Fife and they tested netminder Jarrett Fiske early on, although he had an answer for every shot that came his way.

Dundee Head Coach, Marc LeFebvre then called a timeout in the seventh minute to settle his side down and it proved the right call as Jonathan McBean would fire them ahead just 22 seconds later, as he shot his own rebound past Shane Owen to make it 1-0.

The visitors then doubled their lead on 12 minutes as Alex Tonge fired home a second as he buried it off the post but the Flyers would capitalise on an interference penalty against Dundee’s Kris Inglis and in the 16th minute, Phelix Martineau lifted the puck past Fiske to cut the difference to one.

In the second period, the Stars offence would explode for five goals to put the game out of sight and McBean would net his second of the night after finishing off another of his own rebounds, this time lifting it past Owen inside 26 minutes.

Jake Elmer would then make it 4-1 as he took three attempts on net but only his third would find its way past Owen on 31 minutes but Tom Coolen’s men cooked up a quick response to stop the mauling from Dundee as Ryan Foss brought the score back to 4-2.

However, Dundee did not let up and the onslaught continued as Zach Tsekos was the next to light the lamp, shooting past Owen inside 35 minutes and just 20 seconds later, Brett Gravelle added his name to the scoresheet to make it 6-2.

The Stars then bagged a powerplay goal for themselves as Tsekos cashed in with Fife’s Tyler Heidt in the box for tripping and with a five-goal lead, Dundee then shut up shot defensively.

In the third session, the gloves would come off between Domenic Alberga and Flyers defenseman, Daniel Krenzelok for a quick but uneventful bout and that would be the highlight of the action in the last 20 minutes, as McBean worked hard to find his hat-trick goal but there would be no more scoring.

The Stars have now won four of their last five games, scoring seven against their biggest rivals in back-to-back Tayside Derbies and have kept their hopes of progressing in the Challenge Cup alive but next up they face a visit from Coventry Blaze in league action on Saturday before travelling to Belfast for another must-win cup match.
