Primary school pupils across Tayside were challenged to design a brand-new Dundee Stars tartan in 2023, while the Tartan exhibition was on show at V&A Dundee.
The competition ran for four weeks and over 1,000 entries were submitted. Winners were selected from every school, receiving a family ticket to any Dundee Stars home game.
The winning tartan was designed by Frankie Henry at Tayview Primary School, with Frankie then spending a day working alongside Hayley Scanlan to design a Dundee Stars jersey which has now been presented to the museum. Frankie also received a family season ticket and tartan Dundee Stars for himself and his siblings.
This latest partnership builds on V&A Dundee’s long-standing work with Dundee schools, which started years before the museum was built. Last year saw every Dundee school visit the museum for free, as part of V&A Dundee’s close working with schools and Dundee City Council.

As a family-run community club we believe in reaching out to our community as much as possible and we are always looking for new creative ways to engage.
“We believe the spark of imagination from this competition highlights to our young people that an idea can become a tangible product which will be used for many years to come. Hopefully this initiative will give our young people the belief that they too can become the next Hayley Scanlan.
