To celebrate the Tartan exhibition at V&A Dundee, the Trade-Mart Dundee Stars are delighted to partner with the V&A Dundee and Hayley Scanlan to launch an exciting Dundee Stars Tartan design competition, which will be open to all primary school aged pupils across the region.

We want as many of Scotland’s future budding designers to unleash their creativity and enter this once in a lifetime competition.

We will ask each school to choose their top ten designs and then a representative from the Dundee Stars will choose one winner from each school to go to a final.

At the final, the winning design will be chosen by our Head Coach and Director of Hockey operations Marc LeFebvre and local fashion designer Hayley Scanlan.

The lucky winner will then have the opportunity to work with Hayley Scanlan to design a Tartan themed Dundee Stars jersey, that will be worn at our home game on Hogmanay and the tartan will be used by the Stars for many uses and years to come.

The winning Tartan designer will be invited to work alongside our talented fashion designer, Hayley Scanlan, to produce the limited-edition game top that will be worn at our home game on Hogmanay and the tartan will be used by the Stars for many uses and years to come.

The winning designer will receive a signed customised game jersey and a season ticket to Dundee Stars games for the remainder of the season alongside a free trip to V&A Dundee for their whole class and framed signed Dundee Stars jersey for the school.

Michael Ward, Commercial Manager of the Trade-Mart Dundee Stars, commented: “We are very proud to partner with V&A Dundee and Hayley Scanlan on this exciting project.

“We have been in discussions with V&A Dundee for some time, exploring ways that we can collaborate together in community outreach programmes and the idea of a schools competition to create a Dundee Stars tartan was born.

“We believe this amazing opportunity will spark creativity in our next generations, as they can see theirs and their peers research and ideas carried forward into a tangible and useful product, that we hope will be in use for many years to come.

“We hope this initiative may be the starting point of the next local designer brands such as Hayley Scanlan.”

Gary Jamieson, Schools Development Officer, added: “This is a wonderful opportunity for schools to develop design learning in a real-life context. “Researching the background of Dundee Stars and incorporating the findings into the design is reflective of a user centred approach. “Working alongside Hayley Scanlan will be an amazing experience for the winner.”

Fashion designer, Hayley Scanlan said: “I am delighted to be involved in this project with Dundee Stars and V&A Dundee. “This is an amazing opportunity for all Dundee school pupils and I am so excited to see what exciting designs they come up with.”

The competition is now open and will run until Wednesday 22nd November. The winner will be announced on Friday 24th November and will work with Hayley on the final design on Monday 27th November. To find out more and enter the competition click HERE!
