The Stars kicked-off their preseason friendly fixtures with a 3-2 overtime win in Kirkcaldy last night and goals in the first period from Johnny Walker and James Phelan had them 2-0 up going into the first break.
However, the Flyers would tie it up through former Star, Johan Eriksson and new addition, Max Humitz in the middle stanza, before a scoreless third period would force the game to overtime.
Dundee netminder, Kevin Carr had been back-stopping the Stars well all night and when he made a crucial stop in extra time, that allowed Jake Elmer to bomb forward down the right wing and net the winner for the Marc LeFebvre’s men.
Yesterday’s game also had a lot of intensity between the players as a total of six roughing penalties were called on top of another 14 minor offences and tonight will most likely be no different as the rivalry continues.
The Stars were able to ice all their skaters and gave Kevin Carr the full 60-minutes in net, whilst the Flyers scratched spare imports, Aleksi Makela and Casey Gilling.
Reflecting on last night’s performance, Stars Head Coach, Marc LeFebvre said: “It is hard to gauge anything when there are so many penalties in a game but this is what preseason friendlies are for.
“We are happy we won but there is so much to clean up, our discipline was atrocious tonight for the most part.
“We have to be better, I have to be better too because I took a couple penalties myself due to bench management but overall, I am happy that we got a win in a tough building like this, so we have to carry that momentum into tomorrow.”
After scoring the first game winning goal of the season, Jake Elmer said: “The boys battled back after a really good first period, we were a bit sloppy in the second period but that comes with playing preseason games.
“Everyone is still learning each other’s games and their styles of play, as well as our systems and it is a new league for a lot of guys.
“So, I thought we bounced back really well and handled the adversity well, then we were able to get the job done in overtime.”
