The 26-year-old, left winger iced with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies last season, putting up 11 points (5G, 6A) in 23 USports games, before making his professional debut with East Coast Hockey League side, Norfolk Admirals.
Before last season, Carter spent a brief period of time with Wynyard Monarchs of the Long Lake Hockey League during the COVID-19 shutdown year, in which he scored two goals and added two assists in three matches.
Prior to committing to the Huskies in 2017, Folk had played four seasons in the Western Hockey League, icing for Seattle Thunderbirds, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Victoria Royals, between 2013 and 2017.
The 6-foot-2-inch attacker came up through the Saskatchewan youth leagues and is now ready to make the switch across to Europe for his first full season of pro hockey.
Weighing in at 205lbs, the big Canadian has racked up a total of 81 points in 255 WHL games and 33 points in 81 USports matches, but also a hefty amount of penalty minutes, with a total of 394 in junior league and 115 at collegiate level.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Carter is a former teammate of ex-Stars, Colton Kroeker (Lethbridge Hurricanes, 2015-2016) and Connor Cox (University of Saskatchewan Huskies, 2017-2018).
After completing the signing of Folk, Stars General Manager and Head Coach, Jeff Mason delightedly said: “Carter’s name came to me through a well-respected person, who has placed a lot of really good Canadian university kids in the Elite League and the more research I did on Carter and from speaking to him, I just felt like he was the perfect fit for our team.
“I strive for us to be a team that is difficult to play against and he is certainly going to play his part in that, he is a big strong kid and he skates really well.
“He can play hard on the forecheck, he is not afraid to throw the body and he plays a very heavy style game, which is something I thought would be a really good fit for our team and he will be someone who will have a lot of success here and going forward in the Elite League.”
With three years of wearing an ‘A’ on his jersey as an assistant captain in both junior and college hockey, Mason also discussed the importance of bringing in strong leadership and good people.
He added: “High-character individuals are very high on my list in recruitment and Carter is someone who had all his character references checked out and more.
“He is someone that competes really hard, but is also a leader on and off the ice and is also someone who is extremely hungry for an opportunity to get over here and prove himself.
“So, all of those things combined is what made him the right fit for the team that I am trying to put together and for the identity that we are trying to establish.
“I think he is someone who will engrain himself to the fans in Dundee right from the start and I am really looking forward to him joining us in Dundee.”
Once his first move to Europe was confirmed, an ecstatic Carter said: “I am really excited to join the Stars and to move to Dundee.
“After talking to Jeff, I had a really good feeling about my role and the direction of the team, plus the offer of living in Scotland and Dundee was really exciting and I am looking forward to experiencing a different part of the world.”
Discussing his expectations of the Elite League and what he plans to bring to the team, Folk added: “I think there will be a lot that I will find out throughout the year, but just to play pro hockey in a new city in front of passionate fans is very exciting.
“My style of game is playing fast, being hard to play against and being responsible defensively, but I am also excited to see if I can expand my offensive role in the team as well.”
The Canadian then shared how his friends and ex-teammates, who have spent time in the UK sold him on the move to Dundee.
He added: “There have been many guys from the University of Saskatchewan that have played in the EIHL, including Connor Cox who played with the Stars, but everyone who I talked to raved about Dundee as a city.
“They all said the fans were great and that the rink was one of their favourites places to play in.
“So, I am really excited to get things going and to build on the great season the Stars had last year and continuing to build the fanbase in Dundee!”
In his career so far, Folk has featured in 409 matches, scored 72 goals, assisted 84times, and has collected 761 penalty minutes, whilst also making 36 playoff appearances and collecting 12 points (8G, 4A) and 78 penalty minutes.
Carter is our 9th signing of the summer and joins Drydn Dow, Craig Garrigan, Philippe Sanche, Chris Gerrie, Brython Preece, Mac Howlett, Toms Rutkis and Kris Inglis on the roster for next season.
