The Kitmart Dundee Stars can make history this weekend as they can potentially secure their first ever, first place finish in the Challenge Cup group stage and Jordan Cownie knows just what that would mean to the club.

By Kris Smith

Dundee-born and bred forward, Cownie is in his third season of his second spell with his boyhood club and he recognises how massive finishing top of their group would be for the Stars.

He said: “I think that would be a huge statement, from my time here I think this is the best group we have had here in Dundee.

“Obviously Pach has done a good job bringing in all these guys and things seem to be clicking well so far.”

The Challenge Cup is a trophy that every team in the Elite League places importance on doing well in and it is no different for Dundee as Cownie describes.

“It means the same to every team, we play for three trophies every year and the Challenge Cup is definitely on our priority list.

“So, to be coming out the group stage and to be challenging for that is huge, we are looking good so far”, said Jordan.

With three wins and one loss from their first four Group A games, Dundee have made a fantastic start to the group stage but they will need to continue their good performances in the final set of games warns the Dundee forward.

Jordan added: “We have had a really good start and had some big results against some really good teams, so going into the weekend, we need to take another couple of good results again to finish top of the group.”

Finishing top of their group would be a new record for the Stars and that pole position has some advantages.

Cownie explained: “I think that finishing first would be really cool, obviously the top spot gets the privilege of picking their opponent in the quarter final.

“So, we can pick a tie that will benefit us and maybe reach the semi-finals, which I think would be a first for this club as well.”

With the chance to make history this weekend, the whole Stars squad are determined to try and make it happen in what will be two hugely important games.

“We are so determined to finish top of that group and that would give us a huge chance to not only qualify for the next stage but to make the semi-finals and go onto the finals too”, said Jordan.

The Stars are at home to Belfast Giants on Saturday before crossing the River Tay for the final Group A game and it is against their biggest rivals, Fife Flyers.
