STARS v SHARKS - NORTHERN LEAGUE
Published: 11/01/2010 at 20:22
Match Report - Northern League Sunday 10th January 2010 @ DIA

Dundee CCS Stars 6 Solway Sharks 1

Having lost to the Sharks by the odd goal in three last week and exiting the Scottish Cup rather unluckily at the hands of Fife Flyer the Stars needed a big performance to give their slim Northern League chances any hope. The response from the guys was just what coaches Robertson & Haig would have wanted as on a clear sky, cold winters evening at the DIA the STARS came out in dazzling fashion lighting up their festively success starved fans no end!

Hogan, Dolan & Harper set the Dundee men on their way with counters in the latter part of the first period and a shell shocked “Rusty Russell” in the Solway nets must have welcomed the break and a quick squirt of WD40!

Having seen off the Flyers the previous evening down in Dumfries the Sharks Northern League title aspirations were taking a real hammering at the hands of the 'in their face' Tayside men and a regrouping for the second period was required if they were to salvage anything from their evening.

However in the space of ten minutes a blistering start from the home men saw them race into a 6-1 lead with strikes from Dolan, Wishart & Wallace with the sole counter for Sharks coming from Crane. It was going to take more than a Crane to lift the Solway men as the Stars threatened to melt the surrounding snow that lay around the DIA with a fiery display that had been missing over the festive period.

The Stars continued to dominate in the third period but were obviously content to take their foot of the gas and see out the game in confident style. In a hugely impressive all round display by Robbo's men, much credit must go to the third line that chipped in twice (two more than a Fifer on flag day!).

With their Northern League title aspirations starting to look shakier than Peggy Mitchell's chances of getting back into the Queen Vic, Martin Grubb's men will have to regroup as they face the challenges of the Stars and Flyers in the coming weeks.

I look forward to an exciting end to the season.
