Devils Crowned Champions

Cardiff Devils have been crowned 2016/17 Elite League champions following a 6-2 victory against Sheffield Steelers at the Sheffield Arena on Saturday night.

Team GB international Mark Richardson put the Devils ahead after just 26 seconds, with Patrick Asselin also finding the back of the net during the first period.

Ben O'Connor struck back for the Steelers just over five minutes in to the second frame, but star forward Joey Martin restored the Devils two goal cushion before the second intermission, with Sean Bentivoglio making it 4-1 early in the third period.

Sheffield grabbed a consolation marker through Geoff Walker but further goals from Devils player-coach Andrew Lord and former NHL forward Patrick Bordeleau put the game beyond doubt.

The victory secured Cardiff's first Elite League championship since the league was formed in 2003, having finished runners up in 2011 and 2016, and is the Devils first league title in 20 years (fifth all time) having last lifted the league trophy in 1996/97.

Lord described the success as 'unbelievable' during a post game interview, praising the contributions of everyone at the club, with the Welsh outfit now on course to compete for the EIHL Grand Slam, having already won the Challenge Cup this season.

As newly crowned champions, the Devils have also booked their place in the 2017/18 Champions Hockey League, where they will take on some of Europe's top teams, including clubs from Sweden, Finland and Switzerland.
