Unfinished Business Keeps Marquardt in Dundee

The Kitmart Dundee Stars are delighted to announce the re-signing of Matt Marquardt.

The 31-year-old Canadian winger returns for a fourth straight season in the Elite League after two single campaigns playing for Coventry Blaze and Sheffield Steelers before making the move north to Tayside last summer.

With over 180 games played in the EIHL and 140 points, the veteran winger was Dundee’s leading goal scorer last year. The North Bay, Ontario native scored 29 goals and assisted on a further 24 for a total of 53 points, for Omar Pacha’s side.

After playing for four seasons in the QMHL, one of Canada’s top junior leagues, Marquardt went on to have some success in the American Hockey League, the second highest tier of hockey in the world.

After icing in more than 260 AHL games and 240 East Coast Hockey League matches, Matt headed to the DEL2 in Germany for one season before he soon found himself in the UK.

An impressive campaign with Coventry Blaze led to Marquardt being signed by Sheffield Steelers, before he was eventually lured to Scotland by Pacha in 2018. The Canadian is yet to disappoint wherever he has played.

After locking-up the greatly experienced forward, Pacha said:

“I am excited to get Matt back, I think he is a great leader for the team and he did a lot of good things on the ice and I expect even better this year.

“As a guy, he adds credibility to the team, on and off the ice. He was one of our key guys.

“I think with an organisation like ours, that is growing, it is key to keep a guy like that.

“When you have younger guys or a team with a few rookies, it is good to surround them with leaders, Mags is obviously one of them.

“It is important to get a good leadership core and he is a guy that is trusted and he is a guy that loves being here.

“I think the fans will be obviously delighted, as we are. He is what he is portrayed to be off the ice, as he is in the locker room or on the ice too, a leader, a guy who wants to win and a guy that wants to grow the organisation.”

After putting pen-to-paper for next season Marquardt added:

“I am very excited to be back with the Dundee Stars.

“We had an amazing group last year and I think we took great strides as an organisation and I’m looking forward to continuing to help grow the Dundee Stars.

“I feel we have some unfinished business and I want to be a part of getting it done.

“It was an easy decision because I loved my time in Dundee last year.

“I love our fans and the energy they bring every single night.

“I’m very excited and privileged to play for and work with Omar Pacha and the ownership here at the Stars.”

Early bird season tickets are on sale NOW from the Dundee Ice Arena box office.

Matt is our fourth signing and joins Drydn Dow, Jordan Cownie and Craig Garrigan, who have all re-signed for the 2019/20 season.

Marquardt will again wear #37 for the Stars.
