Dundee had to respond after Saturday’s thrashing from the Capitals but even with an improved effort they could still not overcome a dominant Edinburgh side.

The Stars took to the ice in the capital and Kris Inglis, Anthony Mastrodicasa and Chris Lawrence were all missing from the line-up. The opening period found no goals after both teams had powerplay chances, including a 5-on-3 for the Caps.

Dundee provided Edinburgh with two more powerplay opportunities in the second period, after failing to punish the Caps on an earlier man advantage. Sergei Banashkov broke the deadlock at 34:12 as the Caps were creating more opportunities during the end-to-end action.

Both netminders did not face many shots after 40 minutes of play, Travis Fullerton had faced 22 shots and Pavel Shegalo just 14.

It was not long into the final period when Dylan Anderson put the home side ahead by two, at 45:20. Anderson bagged a goal in last night’s victory as well and has shown his scoring ability with 3 goals and 3 assists in 6 Challenge Cup games.

Dundee were quick to respond as Gabriel Lévesque’s effort found the net at 47:52. Dundee tried desperately to find the equaliser and had a great chance when Mike Cazzola was penalised for cross-checking in the final ten minutes.

They were once again let down by their powerplay and the situation repeated when they had a fourth man advantage, with just 1:13 on the clock. Toby Craig called Sergei Banashkov on a 2+10 checking from behind penalty, to put the Stars back on the powerplay, Travis Fullerton was replaced by an extra skater for the final opportunity.

However Pavel Shegalo and Dmitri Khristich’s penalty killers did their job and seen out the final minutes to earn two points in the Cup standings. Juris Upitis and Taylor Dickin picked up the ‘Man of the Match’ awards.

Dundee remain in second and Edinburgh are still rooted to the bottom of the table. The two remaining games in Group B between the Fife Flyers and Belfast Giants are to be played next week and the second, in the first week of November.

Next week the Stars face the Manchester Storm for the first time this season, as Omar Pacha, Adam Harding and Taylor Dickin all return to their former club looking to cause an upset on Saturday night. On Sunday the Sheffield Steelers are welcomed to the DIA, as Dundee want to get one over on the Steelers following the 8-2 defeat suffered at Ice Sheffield last month.

Tickets are available at the DIA box office and online.
